Not a spa? If you do not currently represent an open spa facility but you are interested in spa benchmarking, visit www.IntelligentSpas.com to review the current reports available or contact us with any queries. Spa Definition In order to calculate reliable spa benchmarks, a definition of 'spa' is required to enable collection of survey information from similar types of spas within a market place. For example, it is not reliable to benchmark large day spas with extensive facilities, in the same analysis as standard beauty therapy salons without support facilities. It is also helpful if the definition is consistently defined so it is comparable across multiple countries and cities. This 'benchmarking' definition of 'spa' may differ slightly to spa definitions published by local spa associations or other industry representatives, which generally need to promote a wider definition of spa to achieve their specific objectives. For the purposes of this Spa Benchmark Program, Intelligent Spas defines 'spa' as "a business offering water-based treatments practiced by qualified personnel in a professional, relaxing and healing environment" (Source: Intelligent Spas, www.IntelligentSpas.com). This definition supports the original meaning of spa being 'healing through water'. Water-based treatments may include body wraps, body scrubs, baths, etc. A relaxing and healing environment distinguishes spas from standard beauty salons and clinical medical centres that are not promoted as spa businesses. Qualified personnel include employees who have successfully completed professional external training courses and/or on-the-job training of relevant standard operating and treatment procedures required of a professional spa business. The following business types are excluded from participating in this Spa Benchmark Program in order to produce reliable and comparable benchmarks for spa operators:
